Construction, Design & Installation Engineered Sanitary Landfill

An engineered sanitary landfill is a waste disposal site designed to minimize environmental pollution and public health risks. It involves carefully selecting a site, constructing a liner, and implementing systems for waste compaction, leachate collection and treatment, and gas extraction. The process also includes ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Site Selection

1

The location must be carefully chosen based on factors like soil type, groundwater depth, and proximity to sensitive areas like residential zones or water bodies.

2

Liner System

A bottom liner, often a combination of clay and synthetic materials, is installed to prevent leachate from contaminating groundwater.

3

Waste Compaction

Waste is spread and compacted in layers, and then covered with a layer of soil each day to minimize odors and prevent the spread of insects and disease.

4

Leachate Collection and Treatment

Leachate, the liquid by-product of waste decomposition, is collected and treated to remove pollutants before it's discharged or further treated.

5

Gas Collection

Methane gas, produced during waste decomposition, is collected and either flared (burned off) or used for energy production.

6

Monitoring

Groundwater and surface water are monitored regularly to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

7

Closure

Once the landfill reaches its capacity, it is capped with a final cover and undergoes long-term monitoring.

Engineered Sanitary Landfill Operation

1

Waste Acceptance

Trucks deliver waste to the landfill, which is then dumped and compacted by heavy machinery.

2

Compaction and Covering

Waste is spread in layers, compacted, and covered with a layer of soil to minimize odor and prevent the spread of vectors.

3

Leachate Management

Leachate is collected and treated to remove pollutants before it's discharged or further treated.

4

Gas Management

Methane gas is collected and either flared or used for energy production.

5

Monitoring and Maintenance

Ongoing monitoring of groundwater and surface water is conducted, and the landfill is maintained to ensure its functionality.
